Of all the problems to afflict the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has to be one of the most troublesome. IBS is a condition that affects the function of the lower and upper gastrointestinal tract, causing abdominal pain or cramping after eating. Other symptoms include constipation, flatulence, diarrhea or mucus in stools. These symptoms should have been present for 90 days before IBS gets diagnosed by a medical doctor.
The causes of IBS remain a mystery because these symptoms occur despite having no physical damage to the intestines themselves. Experts can only conclude that may be triggered by extraneous factors like diet. Eating too many refined foods alters the balance of gut flora and reduces digestive enzymes. Food allergies to substances like casein in dairy and gluten in wheat can also cause IBS. Other possible causes include intestinal parasites and stress. Of course, genetics also plays a role in the onset of the disorder - approximately 30% of IBS sufferers have a relative with the same symptom. It's just that lifestyle factors like diet and stress can irritate the symptoms even more.

Prostaglandins are actually the by-products of the fatty acids we consume in our diet. Once digested, omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids get converted into different kinds of prostaglandins - the former is anti-inflammatory while an omega-6 fat called arachidonic acid (AA) exacerbates inflammation. AA from vegetable oil is believed to be responsible for the intestinal inflammation and discomfort experienced by IBS sufferers.
The good news is that the inflammation can be combated by increasing your intake of omega-3 rich foods like oily fish and walnuts, or taking omega-3 supplements. The fat eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) inhibits the inflammatory actions of AA by competing for the use of certain enzymes. The beneficial effects of EPA are even more powerful when taken with an anti-inflammatory omega-6 fat called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) from evening primrose oil.
Long-term management of IBS means making certain lifestyle changes. Avoid eating high-sodium foods, processed foods, and other types of food that irritate the inflammation further. Take it easy from work and give yourself a break every once in a while. Help your body heal with two servings of oily fish a week, or by supplementing your diet with a pharmaceutical-grade fish oil and evening primrose oil.
