Why Whole Wheat Bread Does Not Always Means Healthy

Are you the health conscious type who shops for grain products made with whole wheat? Do you specify whole wheat pizza dough when you eat at an Italian restaurant? You may be aware that whole grains are healthier than white, but do you know that there are products that only claim to be "whole wheat" but really or not? Or that those that are advertised to contain "the goodness of whole wheat" are not whole wheat at all?
Why Wheat Grain is Healthier

Whole Food Vitamins

It is a known fact that whole grains are better for the health. Whole foods of whatever kind contain more fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants than their processed counterparts. Whole grains have been proven to provide the dietary minerals and vitamins required by the body while whole wheat fiber is highly beneficial to heart and colon health.

Whole Food Vitamins

Unfortunately, even if people try to buy breads, flour, cereals and other grain products which they believe are healthy, they lack the necessary information that would help them make informed choices when it comes to food.

Additives in Whole Wheat Grain Products

There are two ways in which consumers of whole wheat and whole grain products are misled by unscrupulous manufacturers.

1. They include "whole grain" on the ingredients list even if the product does not contain it at all or it may but in almost negligible amounts.

2. They add other ingredients to the whole grain products to improve the taste which in the process makes them worse for the health compared to processed white bread.

What makes it even more shocking is that breads that claim to be 100% natural whole wheat" often list enriched wheat flour as an earlier ingredient. This means that there is more of it that whole wheat. Breads that are said to have "the goodness of whole wheat" really contain synthetic vitamins and tasteless oat or pea fiber thus only the "goodness" of whole wheat but not whole wheat itself.

Enriched or Whole Wheat: Which is better?

Enriched flour may sound healthy but it does not offer the same health benefits as whole wheat. This flour has vitamins and minerals added to it and undergoes heavy processing. According to the Wheat Foods Council (U.S.), the practice of adding the said ingredients dates back to the late 1940's when people suffered vitamin deficiencies as a result of World War II. This may be well and good but the problem is that the vitamin added are laboratory synthesized with other chemicals and impurities thereby resulting in a product that is not quite the same in goodness and nutritional value as natural whole grains.

You can wisen up by doing your research and checking the fine print ingredients listed on the label of the every whole wheat grain product you are considering to buy. Learn how to read between the lines. Check out both the front and the back of the package. Keep in mind that what's written on the front is usually meant to catch your attention so it's mostly hype. What's more important is the information on the ingredients list at the back. It is there where you will know exactly what you are getting.

Vitamin B12 Benefits

Vitamin B12 is one of the most important vitamins of the B-complex vitamins and is necessary for good health. This vitamin was first discovered to be beneficial in the 1940s as it was found to cure pernicious anemia. Vitamin B12 benefits are numerous and include assisting other B vitamins in processing carbohydrates into glucose, which provides essential energy.

Whole Food Vitamins

Vitamin B12 is necessary in maintaining certain bodily functions such as manufacturing red blood cells, regulating metabolism and maintaining the central nervous system. Vision and eye health are also benefited by vitamin B12 as it provides protection to the lens helping to prevent cataracts. Another important benefit of this vitamin is its ability to lower the risks of atherosclerosis. With the proper intake of vitamin B12 homocysteine levels are maintained within a normal level decreasing the chance of developing heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's and osteoporosis. Vitamin B12 also has the ability to raise energy levels and combat fatigue. It assists in relieving the symptoms of depression as it raises serotonin levels and with many studies done on this vitamin it is proven that it can raise sperm cell counts in men with very low levels. Many diseases and disorders have been treated with B12 resulting in improvements or the elimination of them. These include sleep disorders, allergies, asthma, Alzheimer's, tendonitis and memory loss.

Whole Food Vitamins

Although the body produces a small amount of vitamin B12, it is far from enough to provide the requirements the body needs. Vitamin B12 must be consumed daily and can be found in foods such as fish, shellfish, meat, dairy and eggs. Many individuals who avoid animal-based foods develop problems associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. These include irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentration or remembering things and in some cases depression or psychosis. A deficiency in this vitamin can sometimes be difficult to characterize, although there are some common symptoms that include waking up tired and sleeping a lot, white spots on the skin that last for a short time, tingling of the tongue, shortness of breath, migraines, short-term memory loss, sore areas within the mouth and erratic nerve shocks. The gastrointestinal system can also be affected by lack of vitamin B12. Symptoms can include constipation, diarrhea, pain and excessive gas.

Individuals who may be at higher risks for vitamin B12 deficiencies include children, the elderly, strict vegetarians and anyone who has problems processing and storing vitamins within their bodies as well as people who do not eat properly balanced diets. Vitamin B12 is available in supplemental forms, which can be obtained in sublingual tablets or pills.

Discover Mood Boosting Foods For Depression

Before we delve into foods for depression, we would be remiss if we did not state that the causes of depression are not fully understood, but most experts agree that they are probably many and varied. Put simply, depression is a complex condition. It may be triggered by a variety of reasons, including:

Whole Food Vitamins

* Tension

Whole Food Vitamins

* Stress

* Traumatic life event

* Chemical imbalances in the brain

* Thyroid disorders

* Nutritional deficiencies

* Poor nutrition

* Consumption of sugar

* Lack of exercise

* Mononucleosis

* Endometriosis

* Any serious physical disorder or allergies

* Heredity

In addition, food allergies and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) are said to be a common cause of depression.

According to Phyllis A. Balch, CNC, a leading nutritional consultant for more than two decades and author of the well renowned tome "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" who states:

"Whatever the factors that trigger it, depression begins with a disturbance in the part of the brain that governs moods." (Third Edition: Page 315)

Bottom line ....

There are many types of depression, with variations in the number of symptoms, their severity, and persistence and, as such, professional medical help is needed. Immediately contact your physician or call a suicide hot line or emergency local number if you're having suicidal thoughts.

In regards to foods for depression, it's important to keep in mind that foods greatly influence the brain's behavior. Therefore, a poor diet, particularly one that includes a lot of junk foods, is a common cause of depression. More specifically, the levels of neurotransmitters, brain chemicals which regulate our behavior, are controlled by what foods we eat, and neurotransmitters are closely linked to mood. The neurotransmitters, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine are the three most commonly associated with mood.

Now, without further adieu, let's address specific foods for depression and how it may benefit you or a loved one.

Foods for Depression: Food Recommendations

The B complex vitamins play a major role in the normal functioning of the brain and the nervous system. In fact, the B vitamins are often referred to as the stress and energy vitamins. Nevertheless, irritability, fatigue, poor concentration, anxiety and depression can all be signs of a B vitamin deficiency. Most importantly, studies show that clinical depression sufferers often have low levels of one or more of the B vitamins (especially B6, B12 and folic acid) .

Best food sources of the B vitamins: whole grains, all seeds, nuts, liver, kidney, eggs, bran, wheatgerm, brewer's yeast, lentils, beans, soybeans, peas, dairy products, and leafy green vegetables.

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that every cell in the body needs and hundreds of body processes rely on it. Put simply, zinc has an arsenal of important functions, including it is essential for energy production and brain health. Zinc has been found to be deficient in depression sufferers and, as such, you may want to consider boosting food sources containing zinc.

Best food sources of zinc: meat, liver, seafood (especially oysters), wheat germ, brewer's yeast, pumpkin seeds, eggs, ground mustard, and nonfat dry milk.

Complex Carbohydrates - Eat a diet that includes lots of complex carbohydrates. Why? This is because a diet that is too low in complex carbohydrates can cause serotonin depletion and depression.

Best food sources of complex carbohydrates: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, brown rice, millet, legumes, soybeans, and soy products.

Omega-3 fatty acids -The brain requires essential fatty acids, especially DHA, to function properly. In fact, the brain is 60 percent fat. Researchers have found that the lack of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA is linked to depression.

Best food sources of omega-3 fatty acids: Cold water fish like salmon, trout or tuna.

Tryptophan - Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used by the brain produce serotonin, a chemical that is instrumental in regulating mood. However, the body needs sufficient amounts of vitamins B6 and C, folic acid, and magnesium for the formation of tryptophan, which, in turn, is required for the formation of the brain chemical serotonin. In addition, tryptophan is necessary for the production of niacin (vitamin B3).

Best food sources of tryptophan: turkey, fish, meat, cottage cheese, milk, bananas, dried dates, peanuts, all protein-rich foods.

Foods for Depression: Special Recommendations

If you wish to become relax because you are nervous, eat more complex carbohydrates. Eat protein meals containing essential fatty acids for increased alertness. Salmon and white fish are good choices for increased alertness. If you need to boost your spirits, eat foods like salmon and turkey, which are rich in protein and tryptophan.

Foods for Depression: Foods to Avoid

Wheat gluten has been linked to depressive disorders and, as such, you should consider omitting wheat products from your diet.

Avoid artificial sweetener aspartame, which can block the formation of serotonin and cause headaches, insomnia, and depression in individuals who are already serotonin-deprived. Aspartame is found in diet sodas and other products.

Avoid foods high in saturated fats; the consumption of these fats found in meat or fried foods leads to sluggishness, fatigue, and slow thinking.

Avoid all forms of sugar, including normally "good" sweeteners such as honey. The increase energy supplied by these sugars, also known as simple carbohydrates is quickly followed by fatigue and depression.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods.

Investigate the possibility that food allergies may be causing or contributing to your depression.

Foods for Depression: Final Note

While there is simply no denying that food and mood are connected, diet may be just one piece of the puzzle. Therefore, it's important that you seek professional medical help.

Type 2 Diabetes - The Importance of Whole Grains for Diabetics

Whole grains are an important part of a daily diet. Choosing whole grain products instead of refined versions is a top diabetes prevention strategy... people who eat whole grains are less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.

Whole Food Vitamins

One study has also suggested insulin sensitivity is improved in Type 2 diabetics; whole grains have the ability to positively affect insulin levels and they can also keep your weight in check. They are also effective from a heart-healthy point of view.

Whole Food Vitamins

Why whole grain foods fight diabetes: Scientists are not exactly sure why whole grains work so well with insulin, but many speculate that it might have to do with the fiber content...

fiber is well-known for slowing the movement of food through your stomach: the food enters your small intestines much more gradually. This gives it more time in the stomach where it can be properly broken down into a substance called "chyme" which is a lump of food parts which then is pushed into the duodenum.
soluble fiber also helps to lower the glycemic (GI) effect of your meal.
by slowing the processing of food, this gives the body adequate time to release insulin in recognition of an increase in glucose levels. There is also the added bonus that fiber bulks food for disposal, while keeping the intestinal tract as clean as possible.

Whole grains are also popular for their high levels of magnesium and vitamin E. Both of these nutrients are highly sought-after by the body due to the many beneficial uses for both of them. Some experts even believe these two nutrients might also help stabilize blood sugar levels, as well.

Food labeling: The problem is many foods are labeled with terms that are similar to whole grain. If the term "refined" is used in the ingredients list, then chances are this is not a whole grain food item. Why is there such a big difference in the two? Because when a grain is "refined" or processed, it means the grain has been stripped and processed of most, if not all, of its nutritional value.

All is not as it seems: Never go by the type of bread which might imply it is automatically healthy. Also, never go by the color of the bread. Even if the bread is darker in color than regular white bread, it is not a clear indication it is made with whole grain.

Besides the obvious fiber, nutrients and phytochemical advantages that can be derived from eating whole grain foods, Type 2 diabetics also need to be aware of the way white bread breaks down. If you eat white bread it will turn into pure sugar before it leaves your mouth, before it is even swallowed. Most people are not aware white bread breaks down into sugar so quickly. This might be an important piece of information for non-diabetics to know, but it is a critical piece of information for a diabetic.

Another important point to remember: Although not nearly as high as sweets and desserts, breads and grain products are considered to be sources of carbohydrates. It is important to watch your portions of whole grain foods if you need to limit your carbohydrate intake and calories (or kilojoules).
